Edizione: | Brepols Publishers, 1994 | Collana: | Subsidia Mediaevalia | Tempi di rifornimento | Indicativamente procurabile in 15-20 giorni lavorativi | Info disponibilità | Rifornimento in corso | Prezzo di acquisto | € 78,00 | Descrizione | In the spring of 1348, the Black Death arrived in the diocese of Barcelona. The immediate effects were extraordinary mortality and fear. Over the long term, rural life was marked by conflict as peasants and lords reacted to an economy where death had made labour scarce and expensive. Urban society also suffered from plague mortality, but it is a matter of controversy how such demographic changes contributed to the eventual decline of Barcelona in the fifteenth century. The documents of the diocesan register Notule communium 15 (1348-1349) reveal the church's immediate reactions to the plague and provide evidence for patronage and ecclesiastical administration that will be useful to social and economic historians in assessing the immediate and long-term consequences of the Black Death, especially since contrastng material from before 1348 is available in the register Notule communium 14 (1345-1348) calendared by Jocelyn N. Hillgarth and Giulio Silano in the present series.
The Black Death is an overwhelming influence on the register, although it is mentioned directly only a handful of times. The bishop of Barcelona, Miquel de Ricoma, was absent at Avignon throughout his tenure (1346-1361), but his vicars-general continued to provide churches to worthy candidates, promote new clerics, and hear cases in the episcopal court. Their work was complicated in the wake of the Black Death: churches lost rectors, patrons did not present candidates for vacant positions (perhaps due to a lack of qualified replacements), and last wills were left unexecuted. Meanwhile, the usual business of the diocesan courts continued, with debts being registerd, criminal clergy punished, and lax parishioners exhorted.
The introduction to the present calendar describes the historical and ecclesiastical setting, and includes analysis of the process of registration. The calendar contains detaild summaries of the 1036 documents in the register; selected ent | Aggiungi al Carrello |

5. | € 38,00 | EAN-13: 9780888443700 Z. Izydorczyk Manuscripts of the 'Evangelium Nicodemi'. A Census.
Edizione: | Brepols Publishers, 1994 | Collana: | Subsidia Mediaevalia | Tempi di rifornimento | Indicativamente procurabile in 15-20 giorni lavorativi | Info disponibilità | Rifornimento in corso | Prezzo di acquisto | € 38,00 | Descrizione | The so-called Evangelium Nicodmi (EN), a fifth-century apocryphal passion narrative, showed remarkable vitality throughout the Middle Ages and by the close of the period established itself as one of the most influential religious texts, its authority approaching - though not often attaining - that of the canonical gospels.
The importance of the EN for the religious culture of the Middle Ages has long been recognized, yet its scope and vicissitudes, its gradual evolution and transmission, have occasioned but a few tentative explorations. The reason for this paucity of detailed studies and for the continued absence of a comprehensive edition of the EN lies in the circumstances that make them all the more desirable - the apocryphon's enormous popularity in the Middle Ages and, as a natural corollary, the daunting abundance of extant manuscripts.
Manuscripts of the Evangelium Nicodemi offers the first comprehensive listing of all known Latin manuscripts of the apocryphon. Descriptions of individual manuscripts provide information about the coodices (writing material, number of folios, size, date, place of origin, scribes, owners, contents) and about the texts those codices contain (incipits and explicit of the texts that make up the Evangelium).
A series of five analytical and interpretative indexes serves as a guide to the composition of the Evangelium and its satellites, to the chronology of the manuscripts, to their contents, and to persons and places connected with them.
The information gathered in this volume may be of assistance in studying the sources of vernacular translations of the Evangelium, patterns of its ownership and readership, medieval attitudes towards it, and the dynamics of its textual evolution; in investigating scribal practices of selection and compilation; and in identifying manuscripts of other apocrypha.

The excavated physical remains of the city show many phases of its life, from prehistoric to Greek Roman and Byzantine. Throughout these centuries many changes took place. Even the name of the city was changed from Aphrodisias to Stauropolis, later to Caria, and eventually, in modern Turkish, to Geyre. The mosaic pavements of Aphrodisias in Caria are not numerous, but they do cover a wide time span, ranging from the third century BC to the middle of the fifth century AD, a period of approximately seven centuries. They thus provide a representative sampling of an active and thriving commerce in the production of mosaic pavements, both opus sectile and tessellated.

9. | € 39,00 | EAN-13: 9780888443649 S. Campbell The Mosaics of Antioch. The Corpus of Mosaic Pavements in Turkey, 1.

These were published as one group in 1947 by Doro Levi under the title Antioch Mosaic Pavements, even though the geographical area extended well beyond the ancient city of Antioch. For many years that monumental work has provided the basic framework for the history and dating of mosaics in the Roman, Late Antiquity and Early Byzantine periods. However, it has long been out of print, many of the comparanda have been redated, several pavements have changed locations, and some of the pavements are incompletely published.
This new, revised edition deals only with the pavements found in the city of Antioch. The material is organized according to each individual building, rather than on a proposed chronological system as in the original publication. Each pavement is considered in its entirety, including all geometrical borders, so there is less of a purely iconographical emphasis. Much of the comparative material used in past publications of the Antioch pavements has been redated in recent years, and that redating is discussed here for the Antioch pavements. Where necessary new comparanda have been selected, using only mosaics that have firm contextual dating. There is also a useful summary of the geometric motifs, prepared according to the system developed by l'Association Internationale pour l'Étude de la Mosaïque Antique for recording these motifs.
